MotoGP: Miguel Oliveira threatens KTM farewell – Motorsport

Motorcycle “silly season” is in full swing.

After Suzuki’s exit at the end of the season was announced, the factory teams are scrambling to get the services of Joan Mir and Alex Rins.

While it looks like the 2020 world champion will become Marc Marquez’s new teammate at Repsol Honda Team, KTM in particular is showing interest in Prins.

Brad Bender is set for 2023 for the Austrian manufacturer, but Miguel Oliveira’s contract expires at the end of the season. Mattighofeners also wants to retain the four-time GP winner and bring him back to Tech3 – much to the 27-year-old’s dismay.

Oliveira does not accept to join Tech3

“I told him there was a possibility to take him to Tech3,” said sporting director Pete Perrier, who spoke to Oliveira before last weekend in Mugello.

“I told him he’d get an offer from us,” Perrier says on MotoGP.com. “We want him to continue being a KTM racer. But he should be open to taking one of the four places.” “He wasn’t entirely happy with this news. On the other hand, he said he wanted to stay with KTM.”

But a shift followed on Sunday and Oliveira ruled out a return to Tech3. “I am looking at other options outside of KTM. I have told management I will not accept the place in Tech3. I want a place on the factory team,” says the KTM record winner at MotoGP.

“If that is not possible, I will consider other options.” There are other offerings, “you don’t have to worry about a spot in first class motorcycles,” Oliveira notes.

There is no other factory team in sight

But: With a team in the factory, it’s going to be really tough for the 27-year-old. With Yamaha on the verge of extending the contract with world champion Fabio Quartararo, Franco Morbidelli is linked with the Japanese team until 2023.

Francesco Bagnaia is in a well-established position at Ducati, and if Jack Miller leaves, Ina Bastianini or Jorge Martin will be available as successors.

Suzuki is known to be coming out, at Honda it’s all down to duo Marc Marquez, Joanne Mer and Aprilia who recently extended the working papers of Alex Espargaro and Maverick Vinales.

So Oliveira will probably only have to switch to Team Satellite if he wants to continue riding in MotoGP. Possible alternatives to Tech3 would be RNF-Aprilia, LCR-Honda and/or Gresini-Ducati.
