You’ll see big 690 KTM singleton fans at first glance: The new GasGas models SM 700 and ES 700 are available on the same technical basis from KTM and Husqvarna. However, this fact does not detract from the driving pleasure.

Set Gibernau. Older of us will remember the Spaniard as a two-time runner-up in MotoGP, who was Valentino Rossi’s strongest opponent in the years 2003 to 2005. He runs a small racetrack as a training center between Girona and Barcelona. And if you still know that GasGas was founded in Girona in 1980, the circle is closing. The driving show for the new GasGas SM 700 and ES 700 models begins in the morning at City’s racetrack, where the machines are lined up and ready to drift.


The technical basis between the “new” gas Supermoto SM 700 or Enduro ES 700 and the KTM 690 SMC R/Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 Supermoto/701 Enduro is identical. However, there are some subtle differences that emerge as the presentation progresses. But first roll loose and get your Conti Attack SM Evo tires up to temp. With a full tank, the Supermoto weighs less than 160kg, but is also sped up by the most powerful road-legal single chainring. As before: The 692-cc LC4 with 74 horsepower is pure fun and helps the Supermoto achieve sharp dynamics—it’s addictive to push the GasGas SM 700 around relatively tight corners and accelerate with the front wheel properly raised.


GasGas SM 700 is very easy

On the track and then on the country road, the GasGas SM 700 shows exceptional prowess, which owes at least a little to the new cast-aluminum wheels. Mass is better distributed than the classic wire wheel around the axle rather than the rim rim, and the front wheel rim saves about 400g of weight. Also striking is the new, tightly-upholstered seat, which is very narrow in the frontal area and thus creates a dense contact relationship with the machine that feels almost as intimate as that of the Super competition. You can slide far ahead and line up a gas giant with amazing precision as you enter the corner!



Quiet fun

By the way, the boom is available in the moderately low speed range, the single actually needs about 8000 revolutions to punch hard. But: in our opinion, this is not so critical in the concept of a light car. The wheelie can still be pulled clean at any time – also thanks to the smoothly adjustable Magura hydraulic clutch lever. In general, the large single cylinder, thanks to the vertical balancer, works surprisingly well with little vibration. You don’t even feel the slightest tingling in the rubber grips or the wedges. Furthermore, the 700 GasGas sounds quiet with a constant registered noise of 90 decibels. Perhaps the hearty hype will get even better with the fun Supermoto concept. But with noise tuning, firstly there is no problem in the area, and secondly, even sporty mountain pass in Tyrol will be possible.


Let’s move on to the electronics side: there’s a cleanly running automatic transmission with a Blipper reporting function. It does its job properly, but runs smoother when you engage the next higher gear, the higher the revs. If you come from “classic” super moto racing like me, it’s almost unnatural to use automatic transmissions and libre. This makes you fast and efficient, but you have to move your GasGas SM 700 more like a naked sports bike or even a racing machine than a real super moto. Attempting to skew the braking (eg in second gear) will automatically create a higher speed to allow the gear to slide cleanly. You have to drive agitated, shift down without the clutch and start drifting with brutal braking (the monoblock seal grips well and can be precisely dosed) – so my wish would be the option of being able to deactivate the automatic transmission if needed*. Unfortunately, this is not easy, because the sensors (one on the drive shaft and one on the selector shaft) are installed inside and the GasGas dealer does not have a ready-made software solution either – too bad!



On the other hand, the weak position-dependent traction control system operates in two stages and can be turned off if necessary, with the more precise mapping of the two being quite sporty in stark contrast to the conservatively designed mapping layout. The situation is similar with ABS. The second sharp mode is called “Supermoto” and completely deactivates the function on the rear wheel. Don’t worry, dear front wheel artists: Although the Supermoto mode only turns off the ABS on the rear wheel, you can easily put the stoppers on the parquet floor.


700 . gas enduro

We can say that the enduro version of the ES 700 runs just like a supermoto and packs plenty of power for off-road riding. With its seat height of over 900mm, thanks to legal regulations, you can even deactivate the front wheel ABS system – but this was never necessary during show riding on all-gravel gravel roads, through water crossings and even the toughest single tracks.

conclusion

It remains to be seen if the third edition of the 690 Supermoto and Enduro really needs it. However, the truth is that both devices simply strike the heart of every fan of sports motorcycles, as they offer street driving and everyday driving pleasure in pure culture. The Supermoto version in particular, with its cast-aluminum wheels and sharply cut seat, has GasGas’ personal touch.
