In addition to Zwickau, Volkswagen now makes ID 4 in Emden. To this end, the car manufacturer has renovated the plant during ongoing operations since 2020.
After about two years of conversion during ongoing operations, Volkswagen began series production of the ID 4 all-electric compact SUV at its plant in Emden. The first vehicles rolled off the line at New Assembly Hall 20 on Friday (20 May). After the start-up phase and the plant’s summer vacation, 4,000 units of the battery-powered electric vehicle will be manufactured per week by the end of the year, said plant manager Uwe Schwarz.
“A strong signal for Volkswagen, for our plant, but also for the entire region,” the Volkswagen manager said at the start of production in front of dozens of guests representatives of business, politics and the press.
Volkswagen invested 1 billion euros in Emden
For the production of electronic cars, the plant has been converted since 2020 during ongoing operations. In addition to the new production halls, a battery storage facility was also built. By 2024, Volkswagen intends to turn Emden into an exclusive factory for the production of electric cars and, according to its own data, will invest a total of 1 billion euros. The Passat is still being built in parallel in East Friesland. From 2023, the Aero will be produced as a second electric model and will replace the Passat.
With the ID 4 series production, Emden is now the second German factory, along with Zwickau in Saxony, where the model is manufactured. 400 East Friesland employees were temporarily in Saxony to prepare the transition from the combustion engine to the production of electric cars in Emden. They will now gradually train other employees at the Emden plant.
Initially, ID 4 will be manufactured in one shift, from mid-June it will then be in two shifts. According to the Labor Council, about 1,000 of the roughly 8,000 employees in Emden are already working on the production of electric cars.
Works with ID 4 in 3 countries
In addition to Zwickau and Emden, ID 4, the current best-selling electronic model from Volkswagen, is produced at two plants in China and from the fall also in Chattanooga (USA). In the first quarter of 2022, the Wolfsburg car manufacturer delivered more than 30 thousand dinars 4. “Expanding the production capabilities of ID 4 here in Emden is of central importance,” said the head of the core brand, Ralf Brandstätter, at the start of production. “The global production network will grow to five locations and we can then serve the large markets of America, China and Europe regionally with local production.”
Volkswagen wants to expand the BEV’s reach and convert other locations such as Hanover. This is going “according to plan,” CEO Herbert Diess said recently at the group’s annual general meeting. Cars could soon be as profitable as combustion engines. However, environmentalists and many contributors have called for smaller models such as ID 1 or ID 2 to be handled more quickly after compact models, SUVs and sedans.
For Emden VW’s workforce, the switch to e-mobility is likely the biggest change in the nearly 60-year history of the plant, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the port. In December 1964, the first Beetle rolled off the city assembly line and created many new jobs in the structurally weak East Frisia. Passat has been built in Emden since 1977.
