Chardin’s still life with wild strawberries, which was sold for a record amount, can be kept in France: the Louvre has shown interest in this.

DrThe sale of a piece of wild strawberry by Jean-Simon Chardin to a New York dealer for a record €24.3 million with a buyer’s premium has been frozen because the Louvre wants to get the business. The director of the Paris Museum, Laurence de Cars, told Le Figaro newspaper that she wanted the 1761 oil painting Le panier de fraises des bois to be classified as a “national treasure” and was seeking the help of patrons to ensure she could do so. Work for the Louvre can be purchased.

The painting, which measures 38 x 46 cm, was sold to dealer Adam Williams at Artcurial Auctions in Paris last week. He had given a presentation in the hall – as The Art Gazette wrote, possibly on behalf of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. An advisory committee is now scheduled to meet in mid-April. You almost never turn down a request from the Louvre.
